Coyote Minerals offers a slightly different concept in an on-line store for collectors of quality mineral specimens. I deal directly with the miners in San Diego County, and pick up what I feel are solid, reasonably-priced tourmalines, aquamarines, and other gemstone specimens - a lot of it being new finds. San Diego pegmatites are my specialty. You're going to find pegmatite minerals of all kinds from the well-known developments of the Himalaya Mine and the Tourmaline Queen, but also from a host of lesser-known mines and prospects. The Elizabeth R Mine and the Stewart Mine, famous for their stunning Morganites and Rubellites, as well as watermelon tourmaline, in the Pala district, are still quite actively being mined. Specimens are still being traded around from places like the Pack Rat Mine, and Beebe Hole, and the deep green elbaite studs of the Little 3 Mine grow to astonishing size. Have you ever heard of the Carmelita Mine? It has been known by other names over the years, but real development of the site is just beginning, and I look forward to posting a lot of nice pieces from there over the next few years. In addition to seeing the Pala Rubellite and Mesa Grande Bicolor Tourmaline in as fine a detail as a web page can offer, I also hope to add a little bit of personal experience to give you a feel for the mines, their owners, history and current activity as I go along. The result is, hopefully you get access to good material without too much markup, and you also get a personal sense of the what's going on right now at the mines, that result in the availability of these new and historic specimens. Currently, payment is check, money order, or Paypal credit card payments. You tell me what you like via email. If you don't see a price on a displayed specimen, feel free to make an offer. Unless the text says SOLD, anything you see is available. | |

For further reading on this fascinating history of San Diego gem mining, I recommend this well-researched article in the Mineralogical Record by Jesse Fisher, as well as the Mindat Site, which is more of a "wiki" type source for information. It should be noted that occasionally the data is not consistent between these two sources.
